Nomination and Selection Process

Fred Mitchell Award Watch List is released based on prior season results, current season expectations, media reports, information from collegiate sports information directors and coaches, commitment to community service and Selection Committee evaluation. The approximately 750 FCS, Division II, Division III, NAIA and NJCAA place-kickers are eligible to receive the award whether or not they are on the preseason Watch List.

September to November

Performance of all eligible place-kickers is monitored throughout the college football season based on media reports and information provided by collegiate athletic departments.

Public recognition is provided monthly to eligible place-kickers that have performed at an extraordinary level on the football field. Special recognition is also given to place-kickers that have differentiated themselves by proactively volunteering in their local community. Publicity of this monthly recognition will be provided to media in large markets and in the markets of the place-kickers receiving the monthly honors.

Award nominations are due from colleges by December 1 for consideration by the Selection Committee. The timing coincides with various NCAA Divisional National Championship football games in mid-December.

The award is presented at the annual National Football Foundation Chicago Metro Chapter Awards Ceremony. A college tuition scholarship can be presented to the college of the Award recipient. Scholarship funds are received from corporate and individual donations and nominal financial support provided by the Selection Committee.
